We rolled out some changes over lunch today that affect how our departmental workstations reach the rest of the Brown campus and the internet. While we don't expect there to be any issues, we wanted to let everyone know in case they experienced connectivity issues.
For those interested in the network details, read on... The majority of our workstations have IP addresses in the designated private IP address space. As such, they are unroutable on the internet and rely upon having their traffic masqueraded before it leaves the university network. Previously, we had been doing this maquerading at our firewall. With the change over lunch, we are now relying on CIS to provide this masquerading. From a user point of view, there should be no functional difference between these two setups.
