Responding to the increasing preference for Apple products among the CS community, the mslab this summer gained 24 MacIntosh Minis. Replacing the Windows machines for which the lab is named, each shares a seat - monitor, keyboard, mouse - with a standard CS Department-issued Linux machine. Students taking Introduction to Computer Animation (CS125) will be among the first to use them.
With this new installation, the technical staff kicks off support for Mac OS X, providing the same desktop services that we have long provided to linux users, and to unix users before them. The basics, such as network login, filesystem access, and an array of preinstalled software are there. Over time users can expect incremental improvements as we fine tune the configuration and increase our understanding of OS X's quirks (and there are plenty of them).
